X509 Certificates are a means for providing strong authentication of a person or computer system. When used for e-commerce, you want to use a public Certificate Authority (CA), such as Thawte or Versign, for your server. There are however, several situations where one should use a private CA. These include client side authentication for protected web sites (in addition to or instead of, using a password), and for VPN authentication (particulary for road-warrior and business partner connections).
